The Mary Hewitt Loveless, MD Pilot-Project Grant Program for Interdisciplinary and/or Translational Projects in
Asthma and Allergy

Deadline --- TBA
(see internal guidelines below)

Award
One or two grants will be awarded for one year for $140,000 each
(direct costs only; note: the full $140,000 for direct costs will be provided to the successful applicants, as the infrastructure charge related to that amount will have already been paid from the Loveless endowment) .

Eligibility

Program
This notice is to solicit proposals for pilot projects in interdisciplinary and/or translational research in the areas of asthma, allergy and related fields.

The Selection Committee is especially interested in supporting projects that have the potential to open new areas of research in this field, that develop innovative techniques for investigating these problems and/or that represent collaborations between investigators with distinct areas of expertise.

One example would be collaboration between a bio-engineer and a pulmonary physiologist to devise better approaches to study pulmonary function in mice. Another would be a project to develop methods to analyze and manipulate the function of the immuno-regulatory or effector cells of these disorders in vivo in real time. Another would be to search for useful new markers of these diseases in patients with the disorders.

Background
Dr. Mary Hewitt Loveless was an undergraduate at Stanford and was one of only two women in the Stanford School of Medicine class of 1925. While on the faculty at Cornell University Medical School, she began research that led to the design of the first scientifically-based immuno-therapy against life-threatening anaphylaxis from insect stings. This work is considered to represent the first example of scientifically-based immuno-therapy to suppress an immunological disorder. Accordingly, Dr. Loveless is widely recognized as an early leader in the field of allergy and clinical immunology. Through the support of her estate, this pilot grant program seeks to extend research in asthma, allergy and related fields at Stanford by supporting inter-departmental and translational pilot projects.
