DoD Prostate Cancer Research Program
Early Investigator Research Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $300,000.
Purpose: The FY23 PCRP Early Investigator Research Award supports prostate cancer-focused research opportunities for individuals in the early stages of their careers under the guidance of one or more designated mentors. This opportunity allows early-career investigators to develop a research project, investigate a problem or question in prostate cancer research, and further their intellectual development as prostate cancer researchers of the future. All application components for the FY23 PCRP Early Investigator Research Award are to be written by the Principal Investigator (PI), with appropriate direction from the mentor(s).
PI Eligibility: By March 31, 2024, the postdoctoral PI must:
• Possess a doctoral degree (including but not limited to Ph.D., M.D., O.T.D., D.S.W., Sc.D., or equivalent) and
• Have 3 years or less of postdoctoral research experience (excluding clinical residency or clinical fellowship training).
A Career Development PI Waiver is required.

Physician Research Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period will not exceed $750,000.
Purpose: The FY23 PCRP Physician Research Award supports a mentored research experience to prepare physicians with clinical duties and/or responsibilities for productive careers in prostate cancer research. The mentored physician is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) of the application. This award emphasizes equally the quality of the proposed research project and the career development of the PI, which should prepare physicians for careers in basic, population science, translational, or clinical prostate cancer research. All applications for the FY23 PCRP Physician Research Award are to be written by the PI, with appropriate direction from the mentor(s).
PI Eligibility: the PI must be a physician with clinical duties and/or responsibilities who, at the application submission deadline, is either:
• In the last year of an accredited graduate medical education program, either as a resident or fellow, or
• Within 5 years of having initiated their first faculty appointment (including Instructor, assistant professor with PI eligibility, or CE assistant professor).
A Career Development PI Waiver is required for Instructors and CE faculty.

Idea Development Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $900,000.
Purpose: The FY23 PCRP Idea Development Award is intended to support new ideas that represent innovative approaches to prostate cancer research and have the potential to make an important contribution to the PCRP Mission. The key components of this award mechanism are: Innovation, Impact, and Preliminary Data.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
New Investigator: Be an independent, early-career investigator within 10 years after completion of his/her terminal degree by the time of the application submission deadline (excluding time spent in residency or on family medical leave). Time spent as a postdoctoral fellow is not excluded. See guidelines for more information.
Established Investigator: Independent investigators at all levels are eligible.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic Staff-Research (i.e., research associates), Postdocs, and Clinical fellows are not eligible.
Timeline:
Pre-Application (Letter of Intent) Submission Deadline: June 29, 2023 via eBrap
Please include your RPM’s name as business official in the pre-application.
Institutional representative (RPM/RMG or CGO/OSR) Deadline: July 13, 2023

Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $100,000.
Purpose: The FY23 PCRP Exploration – Hypothesis Development Award supports the exploration of highly innovative, untested, potentially high-gain concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods that address an important problem relevant to one or more of the FY23 PCRP Overarching Challenges. This award is designed to provide investigators the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations that may reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific premise upon which a new hypothesis can be based or initial proof-of-principle of an innovative hypothesis, laying the groundwork for future avenues of scientific investigation.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
Stanford eligibility clarification - Not eligible: even though the guidelines indicate postdoctoral fellows may serve as PI, the application and guidelines do not refer to a mentor. Therefore, this is considered a research grant and the Stanford PIship policy only permits independent faculty to apply. Since it is not mentored career development award, Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic Staff-Research (i.e., research associates), Postdocs, and Clinical fellows are not eligible (they may not submit career development PI waivers).

Data Science Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $1M.
Purpose: The FY23 PCRP Data Science Award mechanism supports research where quantitative and analytical approaches, processes, and/or systems are developed and/or used to obtain knowledge and insight from large and/or complex sets of prostate cancer data. If successful, the studies will enable progress toward addressing one or more of the FY23 PCRP Overarching Challenges. It is expected that any tools or datasets generated by this award will be made available for public use.
Eligibility: Independent investigators - Faculty with PI eligibility and CE faculty (with an approved CE faculty PI waiver obtained through their RPM in RMG prior to the pre-application/letter of intent) may be the PI.
Not eligible: Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic Staff-Research (i.e., research associates), Postdocs, and Clinical fellows are not eligible.

Health Disparity Research Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $900,000.
Purpose: The FY23 PCRP Health Disparity Research Award supports promising research ideas that have high potential to make a significant impact in eliminating disparities in prostate cancer incidence, morbidity, mortality, and survivorship. Applications for this award are encouraged to be relevant to one or more of the FY23 PCRP Health Disparity Research Award Focus Areas and must explicitly state how the proposed research is related to the selected Focus Areas(s).
Translational Science Award
Amount of funding: Direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance will not exceed $900,000.
Purpose: The FY23 PCRP Translational Science Award mechanism supports advanced translational research that will foster transformation of promising ideas in prostate cancer into clinical applications, ultimately providing a solution to one or more of the FY23 PCRP Overarching Challenges. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may originate from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s firsthand knowledge of patient care. Principal Investigators (PIs) should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside but can include a reciprocal flow of ideas and information between basic science and clinical science (bench to bedside and/or bedside to bench).
