2010 Agilent Early Career Professor Award

Summary: Limited funding opportunity for assistant professors with PI eligibility involved in measurement technology areas in alignment with the field of Systems Biology and will involve at least two "omics" (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics) and who will seek to build understanding by relating the different views of biological systems while contributing to the understanding of life".

Amount of Funding:  The winner will receive an unrestricted research award of $50,000 per year for 2 years to university in the professor's name along with:
--Option to use all or part of award to obtain Agilent products at 50% discount
--Option to accelerate payments to facilitate procurement of equipment with list price over $100K

Recognition on Agilent'sÊexternal website
Agilent selects one professor each year to receive the award.

Purpose:
Promote and encourage excellent research enabling measurements of importance to Agilent Technologies and the world. Establish strong collaborative relationships between Agilent researchers and leading professors early in their career. Build the prominence of Agilent as a sponsor of university research.

Eligibility: 
Assistant professor with PI eligibility
Candidate completed Ph.D. less than 10 years before January 1, 2010
Selection criteria:
Significant original research contributions enabling measurements of importance to Agilent Technologies and the world***
Outstanding potential for future research
"Special 2010 focus: Alignment with the field of Systems Biology. Work in this area will typically involve two or more of the omics (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.) and will seek to build understanding by relating the different views of biological systems while contributing to the understanding of life."

Internal Submission Guidelines: 
By Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 5 p.m., please submit one PDF containing the following (in the order listed below) as follows:

School of Medicine faculty: to Jeanne Heschele in the Research Management Group at jheschele@stanford.edu.
School of Humanities and Sciences faculty: to Kristi Geerke at geerke@stanford.edu.

[The following internal submission guidelines are based entirely on the sponsor's nomination guidelines** (i.e., 500 word nomination letter, 1000 word summary, and CV)].

You do not need to prepare a budget, an SU-42 form or involve your RPM with this internal proposal process.

1) Title page (printed on department letterhead)
Title of the funding opportunity: 2010 Agilent Early Career Professor Award
Name of nominee, title, department, contact information

2) Nomination letter (one page=500 words**) addressed as follows:
School of Medicine: addressed to Dr. Peter Sarnow and the Awards Committee
School of Humanities and Sciences-Natural Sciences Division: addressed to Dr. Martin Fejer
Please have your nomination letter signed by your division chief or department chair. 
The letter should discuss the candidates' outstanding potential for future research, his/her significant original research contributions enabling measurements of importance to Agilent Technologies and the world, and a brief highlight of the candidate's research contributions in terms of the "Special 2010 focus: Alignment with the field of Systems Biology. Work in this area will typically involve two or more of the omics (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.) and will seek to build understanding by relating the different views of biological systems while contributing to the understanding of life."

3) 1000 words** (2 page, single spaced) (Summary of areas of expertise, contribution to measurement technology, and future research directions)  (This is based on the sponsor's requirements. Agilent request that we "do not include proprietary information".)

4) Candidate's CV** (which per the sponsor's guidelines, include Education and academic background, research and related experience, publications, presentations, and patients, technical and professional recognition, awards, honors, and affiliations)

Selection process:
The School of Medicine Awards Committee will select one nominee and the School of Humanities and Sciences will submit their respective nominee's information to Agilent by December 4, 2009. Five finalists will be announced in January 2010 and the winner of the Agilent Early Career Professor Award will be announced by April 30, 2010.
