Statement of Need
Magnetic resonance imaging is in a state of constant advancement as new techniques are developed to improve patient care. These new techniques result in improved image quality, improved diagnostic and treatment therapies, and a decrease in the amount of time it takes to scan patients. The intent of this course is to address the need for practicing radiologists and technologists to gain an understanding of the physics and engineering of MRI. Because many physicians do not have a strong physics background but are well-versed in the clinical aspects of MRI, this information will be presented in a format that is comprehensible to those with a limited background in physics.
Target Audience
This course is designed to address the needs of individuals with an interest in the fundamental principles and clinical applications of MRI. The target audience is comprised of practicing radiologists, other physicians, researchers, and radiologic technologists who are interested in the evolving technology and applications of MRI. The material requires some background knowledge and may be challenging for those without any familiarity with MRI.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Summarize the basic NMR and MRI physical principles and their application in clinical practice
- Employ current diagnostic MRI advancements for faster and enhanced image quality to diagnose and treat disease
- Optimize MRI image contrast through improved analysis of physical mechanisms and physiological processes of musculoskeletal MSK MRI imaging
- Employ faster imaging strategies and contrast manipulation methods to improve MRI performance
- Incorporate new techniques into clinical MRI scanning protocols and evaluate their potential impact on neurological practices
- Implement MRI for advanced cardiac imaging
- Implement MRI for advanced body and breast MRI
- Utilize MRI for advanced clinical neuroimaging
- Analyze and appropriately manage MRI safety issues
