2017 SPR Caffey Award for Best Research Paper

The Caffey Award for best research paper is the Society for Pediatric Radiology's (SPR) highest scientific honor. This year’s Caffey was awarded to David Larson, MD, Matthew Chen, MS, Matt Lungren, MD, Safwan Halabi, MD, and Curtis Langlotz, MD for the paper titled "Performance of a Deep Neural Network Learning Model and Assessing Skeletal Maturity on Pediatric Hand Radiographs". The paper reported the high accuracy of machine learning algorithms for predicting bone age on pediatric hand x-rays. Machine learning from large data sets is rapidly evolving in medicine and promises to play a major role in radiology imaging in the future.
