Dr. Ghanouni Named Honorary President of the 6th International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound

May 26, 2017

Our very own focused ultrasound pioneer, Pejman Ghanouni, MD, PhD, will serve as the Honorary President of the 6th International Symposium on Focused Ultrasound, to be held October 21-25, 2018 in Reston, Virginia.

Since 2011, Dr. Ghanouni has embraced the role of clinical champion of focused ultrasound within the department of Radiology. He has built the clinical practice to its current point where he is treating two or three patients each week using magnetic resonance imaging guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS), and estimates that he has treated more than 120 patients over his career. The majority of his clinical work has been for bone metastases, uterine fibroids, and essential tremor in adults. Also a pioneer in the pediatric arena, Dr. Ghanouni treats soft tissue tumors in children and teenagers and osteoid osteomas – benign but painful bone tumors.

MRI guided focused ultrasound allows the physician to localize harmful tissue and precisely apply thermal therapy to obliterate the targeted tissue, while monitoring results in real-time, yielding rapid improvement for the patient. MRgFUS accomplishes this without surgical incision, radiation exposure, or significant long-term morbidity for the patient.

Congratulations, Dr. Ghanouni!
