General Clinical Psychology - Subspecialty Psychotherapy

The fellowships offered within the Division of General Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology provide the opportunity for advanced training in clinical psychology.  Our postdoctoral fellowship aims to provide both breadth and depth of training, with fellows choosing to focus their training on one or more specialty areas, while also seeing patients from the Anxiety and Depression Adult Psychological Treatment (ADAPT) Clinic.  Patients treated within the specialty clinics and the ADAPT Clinic present with a wide variety of diagnoses and diversity related factors (e.g., race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, SES, age, immigrant-status). Subspecialty training in evidence-based psychotherapies span a range of clinics that focus on specific diagnoses, specific minority-identifying populations, or type of therapy approach.

Clinical Training

During the year-long fellowship, fellows conduct initial evaluations and provide ongoing psychological treatment to adults. Treatment may include individual, group, and couples and family therapy.

The fellowship program emphasizes evidence-based practice and the use of research to inform and support clinical interventions. Postdoctoral fellows gain experience and receive supervision in evidence-based treatments, which include but are not limited to: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Exposure and Response Prevention, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-based therapies, and Couples and Family interventions.

Fellows gain both breadth and depth in evidence-based assessments and treatments by receiving individually tailored supervised training in their emphasis areas and in general adult psychology.  All fellows have one major and one minor rotation in one of the emphasis areas listed below. In the major rotation, fellows receive training, supervision, and experience treating patients within a particular emphasis area. In the minor rotation, fellows receive training and supervision in a second emphasis area and split their caseload between patients in the minor rotation emphasis area and patients in the ADAPT Clinic for breadth and generalist training*.

*For fellows with a minor rotation is in the ADAPT Clinic, approximately half of their cases will be focused on a specialty area within mood and anxiety disorders and the other half will be focused on developing breadth in training.

The fellowship is structured to provide fellows with a balance of direct clinical training, supervision, educational programming, and professional development opportunities, with fellows spending 50% of their time, or 20 hours, in the provision of direct clinical service and the remaining time in supervision, didactics and non-direct clinical service. Postdoctoral fellows receive intensive supervision, including a minimum of two hours of individual supervision per week, with many postdoctoral fellows receiving additional supervision and training. Postdoctoral fellows spend a minimum of six to eight hours a week in didactics, supervision, and clinic meetings. The balance of training activities allows postdoctoral fellows to gain supervised training in evidence-based practice and prepare them for autonomous practice.

Areas of Emphasis

Supervision

Fellows receive supervision from two departmental faculty. The major rotation supervisor oversees the fellow’s training in a major emphasis area and the minor rotation supervisor oversees the fellow’s training in a second emphasis area and in treating general mood and anxiety disorder cases. Some fellows have a third supervisor when they have selected to complete an additional mini rotation.

Additional Training: Research, Supervision or Teaching

Postdoctoral fellows spend a half-day engaged in one of the following activities:

  1. Research: Postdoctoral fellows can choose to devote a half-day per week to a research project under the mentorship of one of our Stanford faculty members.

  2. Supervision (Adult Subspecialty Psychotherapy track fellows only): Postdoctoral fellows can choose to devote a half-day per week to gaining supervision experience.  Postdoctoral fellows interested in supervision spend Thursday afternoons at the Menlo Park VA, where they help supervise psychology graduate students who are working in the Mental Health Clinic.  Our fellows receive supervision on their supervision by Drs. Erin Heinemeyer and Stephanie Crockett.

  3. Teaching: Postdoctoral fellows can choose to devote a half-day per week to clinical teaching under the mentorship of one of our Stanford faculty members.

Stipend and Benefits

In addition to top-quality training, we offer a generous annual stipend, health benefits, and leave policy, as well as many additional benefits that come with being a member of the vibrant Stanford community.  Further details can be found on the Stanford Postdoctoral Fellowship Program page.
