Research InterestOur research is aimed at defining the pathways of p53-mediated apoptosis and tumor suppression, using a combination of biochemical, cell biological, and mouse genetic approaches. Our strategy is to start by generating hypotheses about p53 mechanisms of action using primary mouse embryo fibroblasts (MEFs), and then to test them using gene targeting technology in the mouse.

Research InterestWe seek to understand the mechanisms responsible for the resistance of cancers to treatment and to develop strategies to overcome these resistances. We are using molecular and cellular techniques and mouse models to exploit tumor hypoxia with drugs activated by hypoxia and anaerobic bacteria as tumor-specific gene therapy vectors. We are also testing ways of inhibiting the bone marrow rescue of the tumor vasculature following therapy.

Research InterestI specialize in the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. I am interested in developing stereotactic body radiotherapy for tumors of the liver, both primary and metastatic. I am interested in developing functional imaging as a means of determining treatment response with radiation. I am also interested in developing image-guided radiotherapy to improve radiation delivery for GI cancers to reduce toxicity and improve disease outcome.

Research InterestWe are interested in the biologic effect of gene expression changes that occur in the solid tumor. Many of these expression changes are due to the micro-physiology within the tumor. Several of these genes have been implicated in driving malignant progression and/or regulating response to therapeutic intervention. We hope to use these molecular changes to develop novel targeted therapies that take advantage of tumor specific gene expression changes.

Research InterestMy lab focuses on cancer stem cell biology and its implications for cancer therapy. We are interested in developing a deeper molecular understanding of cancer stem cells, including identifying pathways and genes important for proliferation and self renewal. We also study these processes in normal adult stem cells in order to identify differences that could be exploited therapeutically. The goal of our studies is the development of novel therapeutic strategies for eliminating cancer stem cells.

Research InterestMy research interests are in the field of robotic radiosurgery and quality assurance of new medical devices. In robotic radiosurgery, I have focused on real-time motion tracking of tumors which move with respiration. Recently, this research has expanded into tracking heart motion as well. Quality assurance of novel medical devices seeks to develop safety protocols for devices in which clinical failure modes are not yet known. In addition, I am studying process design and information flow.
