Research InterestWe develop and use the tools of molecular imaging to understand oncogenesis, reveal patterns of cell migration in immunosurveillance, monitor gene expression, visualize stem cell biology, and assess the distribution of pathogens in living animal models of human biology and disease. Biology doesn't occur in "a vacuum" or on coated plates--it occurs in the living body and that's were we look for biological patterns and responses to insult.

Research InterestMy research centers on language development in children who are developing typically and children with a variety of clinical disorders that put language learning at risk, including chronic otitis media and early focal neural injuries to the left hemisphere. Experimental methods include behavioral studies and functional magnetic resonance imaging. I am also interested in identifying tools and processes for improving health care to children with developmental and behavioral disorders.

Research InterestThe Penn lab is studying the role of placental factors in brain development. We are using novel mouse models to explore factors that contribute to normal neurodevelopment and the effects of their loss following premature birth. We are focused on the influence of steroid hormones (estrogens and progestins) on cerebellar development and, collaboratively, are extending our studies to hippocampal stem cells and forebrain neurons.

Research InterestOur research is focused on the study of the ontogeny and control of heme catabolism and bilirubin production in the developing neonate. A better understanding of the role of increased bilirubin production in neonatal jaundice and the prevention of hemolytic jaundice has remained an overall objective of our program. Thus, we are exploring the pivotal role of the enzyme heme oxygenase (HO), the rate-limiting enzyme in the production of bilirubin in the developing neonate.

Research InterestMy primary interests are in the area of neonatal nutrition and developmental gastroenterology. The use of parenteral nutrition in very low birth weight infants, and the introduction of early enteral feeding to stimulate gastrointestinal maturation are my specific areas of investigative endeavors.
