Research InterestThe recruitment of key effector immune cells to the tumor microenvironment is critical for improving outcomes in cancer treatment. Our research has focused on evaluation of a novel leukocyte chemoattractant, chemerin. We have shown it can act as a tumor suppressive cytokine by marshaling the host immune system and skewing the number and ratio of key anti-tumor effector cells at the site of tumor. We are continuing our preclinical studies of chemerin, and plan to expand the general approach.

Research InterestWe are interested in the hormonal and signal transduction pathways that control epithelial ion transport. Our model system involves tight epithelia, typically found in the distal nephron of the kidney. Clinical implications of our work include a better understanding of the pathogenesis of salt-sensitive hypertension and hypertension associated with the insulin resistance syndrome.

Research InterestThe lab is studying the mechanisms controlling B cell responsiveness and the balance between tolerance and autoimmunity. B cells deficient in CD72 are hyperresponsive to stimulation through the B cell receptor. We are examining the alterations in B cell signaling in these B cells and the mechanisms by which CD72 deficiency partially abrogates anergic tolerance. We hope to learn how deficiency in CD72 leads to spontaneous autoimmunity and increased susceptibility to induced autoimmune disease.

Research InterestI am interested in the long-term consequences of chronic interactions between the human host and the microbial world. Recently, we have focused most heavily on Helicobacter pylori, tuberculosis and helminth infections. I also remain strongly interested in diarrheal diseases, particularly in the developing world, and in sanitation and hygiene.

Research InterestMy work is in two areas 1. I study research problems where biological, psychosocial and cultural aspects meet in the care of persons with chronic and serious illnesses. 2. I study the pedagogy of health e-learning using multi-media and Web 2.0 techniques with a special interest in the science of Social Media ( blogs, micro-blogs, etc) and videos to foster learning behaviors and change
