Research InterestOur long term interest is to have a better understanding of the natural antithrombotic pathways and the pathophysiology of vascular thrombosis. We have focused on thrombin, the key enzyme in the blood clotting cascade. Our goal is to develop new antithrombotic agents and devise new diagnostic tests for vascular thrombotic disorders.

Academic Appointments Instructor, Medicine - Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine
Clinical Focus- Critical Care
- Pulmonary Critical Care
Research InterestMy research focuses on the physiolgogic and biomarker characteristics of early acute lung injury (ALI) prior to need for mechanical ventilation. While, to date no pharmacologic treatment has improved survival in ALI, following the paradigm of early goal directed therapy for severe sepsis, clinical benefit may derive from identifying patients and initiating treatment prior to the need for positive pressure ventilation (and therefore prior to meeting current study entry criteria).

- Care of patients with multiple chronic medical conditions
Research InterestAt Stanford Coordinated Care we are developing and researching a model of care for patients with complex chronic medical conditions who are not 'doing well'. We will assess four domains for each patient: the medical neighborhood; social support; self-management; and medical status and help patients develop their skills and support systems in these areas. Our goal is the triple aim: improved patient experience, improved medical outcomes and cost savings.

Research InterestPancreatic and esophageal cancers are common and deadly cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. Our laboratory is currently focused on the characterization of genes important in tumor development and growth. Such genes will potentially serve as therapeutic targets. An additional focus of the laboratory is the development of diagnostic assays for the early detection of pancreatic and esophageal disease.
