My research focuses on imaging cell signaling in the heart. I am developing molecular imaging probes that track to injured heart tissue, such that non-invasive imaging techniques, like cardiac MRI, can visualize these probe signals in real-time. The translational goal of my research is to develop new ways to detect early cardiac injury before permanent damage occurs, so that preventive medical therapy can be started.

    • Transplant Hepatology
    • Gastroenterology
    Research Interest

Dr. Daugherty is a transplant Hepatologist with full-time clinical responsibilities. She is particularly interested in the natural course and management of recurrent Hepatitis C after liver transplant, and the effect of immunosuppression on HCV recurrence.

    Research Interest

My research examines genetic influences on smoking with an emphasis on pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics. Current work is translating pharmacogenetic results from clinical trials for bupropion and nicotine replacement therapy into a new clinical trial of genetically-tailored smoking cessation therapy in primary care and medical education. Genome-wide association data and functional neuroimaging complement this work by identifying new molecular targets to advance the state of the scienc

    • drug induced pulmonary hypertension
    Research Interest

My work is aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in the development and progression of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). I am interested in understanding the role that the BMP and Wnt pathways play in regulating functions of pulmonary endothelial and smooth muscle cells both in health and disease.

Dr. Desai is the Director of the Quantitative Sciences Unit. She is interested in the application of biostatistical methods to all areas of medicine including oncology, nephrology, and endocrinology. She works on methods for the analysis of epidemiologic studies, clinical trials, and studies with missing observations.

    Research Interest

    1. Use of an administrative database (UNOS) to study lung transplant outcomes. 2. Expression of the plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) 1 antibody in peripheral blood after lung transplantation and its association with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (chronic rejection). 3. Impact of airway hypoxia, due to lack of bronchial circulation, on long-term lung transplant outcomes. 4. CMV specific T-cell immunity in lung transplant recipients and its impact on acute rejection.

    • Infectious Disease
    Research Interest

My research uses cultivation-independent methods to investigate human-associated microbiota during health and disease. This work exploits high-throughput molecular approaches to characterize stereotypic patterns of microbial prevalence, diversity and abundance associated with specific clinical syndromes of interest. I am especially interested in identifying and enumerating cultivation-resistant pathogens causing cryptic infections, particularly intra-amniotic infections leading to preterm birth.
