Research InterestThe major goal of our research is to gain insight into the prevention and control of HIV and other viral pathogens by studying the interplay between the virus and the host immune response. We investigate the role of various arms of the immune response, but with a particular focus on NK cells. We hope to gain additional insights into control of infectious diseases by studying how pregnancy modulates immune responses.

Research InterestOur research is focused on the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) in inflammation and infection. In particular, we study how the ECM in injured and healing tissues provides contextual cues that drive the behavior of regulatory T-cells and other leukocytes. Our goals are 1. to understand how the matrix contributes both to normal wound healing and to immune dysregulation, such as that seen in asthma and autoimmunity, and 2. to devise novel strategies and tools to promote immune tolerance.

Research InterestMy research uses cultivation-independent methods to investigate human-associated microbiota during health and disease. This work exploits high-throughput molecular approaches to characterize stereotypic patterns of microbial prevalence, diversity and abundance associated with specific clinical syndromes of interest. I am especially interested in identifying and enumerating cultivation-resistant pathogens causing cryptic infections, particularly intra-amniotic infections leading to preterm birth.

Research InterestMy lab focuses on better understanding virus-host protein-protein interactions. We combine novel proteomic approaches, including high-fidelity microfluidics platforms, with molecular virology, biochemical, and functional genomic approaches for identification of host partners conservatively required by various viruses and development of broad-spectrum antiviral strategies with a high genetic barrier for resistance. We focus on Flaviviridae (currently, hepatitis C (HCV) and dengue) as well as HIV

Research InterestHepatitis C virology, bio-organic chemistry, and chemical biology. My current work focuses on probing the interaction between the NS5A nonstructural protein of HCV and PIP2, a membrane lipid found in all cells. Disruption of this interaction appears to prevent HCV from replicating.

Research InterestMy group’s research is on the mechanisms and consequences of virus evolution with a focus on HIV therapy and drug resistance. We maintain a public HIV drug resistance database (http://hivdb.stanford.edu) as a resource for HIV drug resistance surveillance, interpreting HIV drug resistance tests, and HIV drug development. Our paramount goal is to inform HIV treatment and prevention policies by identifying the main factors responsible for the emergence and spread of drug resistance.

Current Role at StanfordThe research we conduct focuses on the cognitive neuroscience of chronic infection-related diseases, such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Lyme Disease, some types of Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Encelphalitis, Meningitis and others. We are exploring cognitive impairment in neurologically healthy and impaired participants to develop neuropsychological models of how infectious disease can produce cognitive impairment. Using a combination of Clinical Neuropsychiatric techniques, Neuropsychological testing and Electroencephalographic (EEG) measurement, we relate functional brain dynamics to patient symptoms in real time.

Research InterestDr. Zolopas research applies a variety of clinical epidemiologic methods in an effort to optimize antiretroviral therapy and understand the impact of drug resistance on response to ARV. Areas of focus include the clinical application of resistance testing in optimizing antiretroviral therapy, clinical cohorts, trials of antiretroviral therapies and population-based epidemiologic evaluation of HIV resistance and efficacy of ARV therapy. More recently studies focused on premature aging in HIV.
