Current emphasis is on seasonal and avian influenza, malaria and smallpox vaccine studies. We secreend 20,000 newborn infants for congenital HCMV infection in 3 local hospitals and continue with prospective audiology and immunology follow-up of identified children. This virus is a major medical problem in immunocompromised individuals. The virus is very large, carrying over 200 genes. We have characterized functions involved in viral growth (regulation of gene expression, replication, genome packaging) and pathogenesis (tissue tropism, latency).
