We are interested in the mechanism of action of known longevity genes, including FOXO and SIRT, in the mammalian nervous system. We are particularly interested in the role of these longevity genes in neural stem cells. Astrocytes and neurons interact, and have unique vulnerabilities to injury based on their patterns of gene expression and their functional roles. We study gene therapy with heat shock proteins, changes in mitochondrial function, oxidative stress and inflammation during ischemia.
