Ethology of the aging face in a mirror.

Explored the ethology of aging people's reactions to the reflection of their aged faces in a mirror. An ethological observation was carried out using a population of aging individuals who were neurologically healthy according to psychometric tests. Ss were placed in front of a large mirror in a conversational situation with an observer. Ss were observed frequently showing no recognition of their own faces in the mirror, combined with normal recognition of other people's faces. Ss made awkward gestures toward the mirror, with nonverbal and body language always directed at their conversation partner, never at the mirror. Avoidance strategies vis-a-vis their own images were adopted by Ss.
