Functional neural integration and musical skill: Preliminary EEG evidence.
proceedings of the American Psychological Association. 2006
Musical skill appears to rely on a unique functional brain network, occupying most of the cerebral cortex at once. We found two cortical areas, the temproal-parietal junction, which were highly active during high levels of musical skill. Alternatively, only the left temporal-parietal junction was active during moderate musical skill. This finding, when taken with others, may have training implication for those aspiring in the arts.
