The response of tumors to radiation therapy is said to be governed by "4 Rs", namely reoxygenation, repopulation, repair and redistribution. Although this simplifies the actual situation, it provides a useful starting point for my research. My overall aim is to improve our ability to predict the status of these biological traits, and thus the likely tumor response to radiotherapy, in specific tumors using non-invasive "molecular" imaging. The first part of this project is to better understand the information that can be derived from such imaging data, and I am currently investigating the significance of variations in the uptake of the hypoxia-specific PET radiotracer [18F]-EF5. The second part is to use these imaging-derived observations to generate predictions of tumor response using mathematical models. Finally we aim to use these predictions to guide patient-specific treatment strategies, for example through specially adapted dose maps for conformal radiotherapy.
