Case study: Treatment adherence in a 13-year-old deaf adolescent male
Clinical Child Psychology and Psychiatry. 2001; (4): 551-562
In this paper we report the case of a 13-year-old deaf adolescent male with end stage renal disease presenting with incomplete adherence to his medical treatment regimen. We review the factors contributing to his poor treatment adherence, including developmental, communication and psychiatric issues. We describe an inpatient treatment intervention comprising educational, organizational, and behavioral components, as well as the individual and family psychiatric treatment of the patientÂ’s comorbid psychiatric illness. We discuss adaptations to the treatment intervention made to address the issues related to the patientÂ’s hearing impairment.
