  • Anomalous pulmonary venous return in the staged palliation of functional univentricular heart defects.

McElhinney DB, Reddy VM. Ann Thorac Surg. 1998; 66 (2): 683-7

Bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt and Fontan repair are now commonly performed in patients with a variety of forms of complex single ventricle, including those with anomalies of systemic, pulmonary, or systemic and pulmonary venous return. These anomalies are ideally dealt with during bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt, thereby minimizing the complexity of the eventual Fontan procedure.
