Current Research Interests

Our interest lies at the frontier of Transfusion Medicine by developing and optimizing new cellular therapies such as islet transplantation for patients with Type 1 Diabetes.

Our primary focus has been to treat IDDM-I with pancreatic islet-cell replacement therapy instead of insulin-injections. We have studied pancreatic islet preservation and function after their isolation from the pancreas and we have developed new conditions of isolation to optimize islet cell function for transplantation. This new therapeutic approach still needs refinements, which we are working on, to prevent long term islet-graft failure from recurrence of autoimmunity, rejection, and/or insulin resistance.
