Abraham Verghese, leads PRESENCE, a multidisciplinary center housed at Stanford’s School of Medicine that studies the human experience of patients, physicians and caregivers with an emphasis on better use of technology, reducing medical error, and understanding the patient-physician relationship.  Verghese is a physician, a  voice for humanistic medicine, and  a writer –his last book Cutting for Stone was an international bestseller. He is the Linda R. Meier and Joan F. Lane Provostial Professor, and Vice Chair in the Department of Medicine. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, and received the National Humanities Medal from former President Obama.
