Kevin Boyd - A brief history

Stereo photography (and 3D in general) is one of my hobbies. Stop by my office if you want to use a pair of 3D glasses.

NOTE: This page has not been checked for current accuracy and reflects reality in approx. 2003. See the live home page for current reality.

I began working at medIT (now IRT) the first week of June, 2000, as Lead Web Designer for the Web and Multimedia Services group. I have responsibility for maintaining and improving the design of Stanford University School of Medicine sites, helping with ongoing and new development projects, manning the "Web-Help Desk," conducting training activities and managing projects. I'm a firm believer in user-centered, functional design. You can help me (and yourself) by pointing out any functionality or design problems or issues on any of the SUSoM sites, and by forwarding any user comments or complaints on these issues to me. I can be reached at .

I'm glad to have the opportunity to serve the users of this system. It's my pleasure to assist and advise staff, faculty and students in areas where I have any knowledge. A list of my skills and interests can be found at the end of this page.

I have a brag site at www.onlineartdirector.com, where you can find my manifesto, a resume, links to some of the sites I've designed, my art and design portfolio, a funky self-promotional flash movie (my first), and some samples of my writing. Here is a brief rundown of my life and career:

Here's an illustration I did some time ago for a story about California bashing. It became relevant again with the power crisis of 2001.

Born August 28, 1960 (yes, I'm a Virgo) in Bethesda Maryland, the youngest of 5 siblings, 4 boys and 1 girl (the oldest)

Lived in St. Louis, Mo. and N.Y., N.Y. before settling in a Maryland suburb of Washington D.C. at about age 10

Attended Bishop MacNamara High, a Catholic boys school, despite being a radical agnostic

Worked at the U.S. Geological Survey as a Junior Fellow cartographic draftsman and illustrator for four summers while attending college

Earned a B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, class of '82

Spent almost 20 years working for newspapers, including The Chicago Tribune (6 years), The Orange County Register (2 years) and the San Jose Mercury News (almost 11 years); progressed from Staff Artist to Computer Graphics Specialist (artist/mac wrangler) to Art Director, a position I held for 5 years

For more than 8 years I've researched, written and illustrated graphics for Medical Advisor -- a weekly column that answers readers' medical questions, currently syndicated to over 150 newspapers; I've produced over 400 graphics on many medical topics

Have lived in the Cambrian area of south San Jose since 1998 with Robin, my partner since 1995. Robin is an environmental program manager at IBM. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. We met when we both worked at the Jan Jose Mercury News. She likes to garden and is starting to learn HTML. We are both vegetarians.

Have designed web pages since 1996; I worked for several months in Mercury Center, the online edition of the Mercury News, as a designer/producer; after Mercury Center was spun off to bayarea.com (and later spun back to the Mercury News as MercuryNews.com), I led a small content coordination team that wrangled stories, photos and graphics from the newspaper to the dotcom, and built the local news content area of the home page

An amateur photographer, interested in stereo and other photography.
