The didactic component of fellowship training includes both structured formal curriculum as well as daily bedside teaching during inpatient and outpatient care.

Curriculum

Pediatric Infectious Disease Lecture Series

This weekly lecture series is provided by pediatric infectious diseases faculty, adult infectious diseases faculty, other Stanford University faculty, and visiting faculty. Over the course of the three year fellowship, the series covers all of the fundamental aspect of pediatric infectious diseases, meeting the requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Infectious Diseases Content. Aspects of patient management as well as training in manuscript and grant writing, and research methodology are also covered. In addition, reviews of the various career opportunities available to infectious diseases physicians are presented by experts in these career roles.

Adult Infectious Disease Lecture Series

A weekly lecture series provided by the adult infectious diseases faculty which rounds out the fellows’ knowledge base by providing formal training in infectious diseases less commonly encountered in pediatrics. Also included are infectious diseases journal clubs and separate HIV journal clubs.

Clinical Case Conferences

Each week challenging inpatient and outpatient infectious disease cases are presented to and discussed by the Division, with attending physicians, fellows, residents and medical students in attendance.

Mini Review Sessions

Mini review sessions are brief summaries of the current medical literature presented by a Division faculty member pertaining to specific infectious disease topics.

Red Book Rounds/Board Review

A fellow run, weekly session that includes a review of specific Red Book topics and a review of PREP infectious disease questions.

MD-MD Referral Review

Monthly review of interesting and instructive referral questions from community physicians. This format highlights key clinical questions and allows fellows to reason through the cases and compare answers with the recommendations that the faculty provided.

Microbiology Rounds

Weekly laboratory rounds with the Stanford University Microbiology and Virology directors highlighting interesting laboratory findings coupled with short didactic pearls.

Microbiology Rotation

During their first year the fellow rotate twice for two weeks through the Microbiology Laboratory at Stanford University Hospital. During this rotation the fellow spends time at each of the different benches in the laboratory learning detailed diagnostic and assay information.

Fellows Lectures

Teaching is an important role for the infectious diseases physician. As part of their training, fellows will give formal lectures both to the infectious diseases division and also to the general pediatric residents.

Presentations

The pediatric infectious disease fellows participate in presentations and meetings within the department and at national and international infectious diseases meetings. Fellows receive both formal and informal verbal and written feedback for all presentations by attendees including peers, faculty and staff.

Assessments

Each year the fellows take the Pediatric Infectious Diseases In-Training Exam. Results of the exam are used to inform changes to the curriculum to focus on knowledge gaps identified. Fellows are encouraged to take the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Boards as soon as possible upon graduation from the program. First time pass rates for fellows graduating from our program are higher than the national average.

Patient-focused Teaching

The second didactic focus revolves around “hands-on” patient care. During clinical rounds, all aspects of the patients followed by the clinical service are reviewed, and in the course of the fellow’s training, each will have informal discussions and literature review of all aspects of infectious disease care.
