The Healthy Campus Initiative at UC Irvine: Take the Stairs (2018 - Present)

Project Description

As part of a University of California-wide Healthy Campus Initiative, the Take the Stairs project will conduct an environmental audit of barriers and facilitators to choosing the stairs over the elevators at the UC Irvine Campus.  This project is taking place in the context of an effort to place signage in campus buildings to encourage pedestrians to take the stairs.

  • Campus Recreation, student Health, and various academic departments of UC Irvine

Participants

  • Staff, faculty, and students

Research Question

Can an environmental approach stimulate more physical activity in the form of more frequent use of the stairs in place of elevators?

Our Voice Impact

"This experience has changed my life.  I see inadequacies everywhere I go as it relates to pedestrian access and safety.  I even stop [at] construction sites to remind them to be considerate of the handicapped in our community.  Thank you all so much for this awareness and empowerment to require change."
