Resident Life

Life Outside Residency

Residency can be taxing and arduous at times; but, the experience is more than just clinical time, conferences, and studying.  Stanford's residency programs have a long tradition of placing a priority on resident well-being, and from the program director to the faculty to the staff of the Graduate Medical Education Office, a strong support network exists to help the transition to a new and challenging stage in life.

Our Orthopedic Residency program prides itself as not only being a great academic program, but also as one that fosters diversity, comradery, and support.

Also, take advantage of Stanford's state-of-the-art athletic centers including group fitness classes, climbing wall, open basketball, raquetball, and volleyball courts, cardio equipment, weightrooms, swimming center, and more.

Resident Housing

"The Bay Area," "Silicon Valley," and "Palo Alto" are all associated with the highest living expenses due to the climate, quality and variety of cultural activities, educational facilities, sports, dining, and other entertainment opportunities. Recognizing the costs, there is a major effort to provide residents with appropriate housing allowances and assistance in finding a nice, convenient place to live.  For more information regarding where Stanford residents live, please follow this link:

Family Resources for Residents

Stanford offers a variety of on-site, off-site, and back-up childcare options, in addition to resources designed to help you manage all aspects of family life, with the goals of alleviating stress and navigating through busy seasons in life.

Pets are also a wonderful part of the family, and Stanford offers resources and benefits to help keep them healthy and happy as well.

Transportation

All of our practice locations are accessible by car, bike, and transit.  Your own car as primary source of transportation is favorable as parking is available on Stanford Campus, at the Redwood City Outpatient Center, Valley Medical, and the VA.

'Lyft Business' is another available option through the Stanford Health Care and Lyft Inc. partnership establised September 2019.  This will accommodate employees traveling to hospital campus sites, as well as other business-related trips.
