New Technologies
As a leader in research, the Stanford Eye Laser Center employs the latest technologies
available for vision correction. Equipment in use in various procedures and clinical
trials includes:
VISX Star S4 IR Active Trak
This excimer laser system is the latest generation of VISX technology. It incorporates
many new and exciting technology features:
• The variable spot beam technology. This advancement allows the beam to
range in size and shape so that the delivered energy is more custom to the patient's
cornea.
• 3D active track allows the laser to follow the tiny motions of your eye
instantaneously and automatically in all three dimensions. 3D active track repositions
the laser to insure accuracy and it does not require you to hold your eye still
like other non-tracking lasers so that you can relax during the treatment.
• VSS, variable spot scanning, is an exclusive VISX laser technology that
allows a treatment area. This technology allows a blend zone that increases the
total treatment zone by 51%. This can be very helpful in patients who have concerns
about post surgical glare and halo.
• Iris Registration (IR), the first FDA-approved, fully automated, non-contact method of alignment of the CustomVue treatment to the corneal site.
Bausch & Lomb Technolass 217-Z Scanning Spot Excimer Laser
• This latest generation of excimer laser from Bausch & Lomb uses an
innovative technology called a flying spot laser. A narrow beam contacts the
eye at lightning speed and literally dances over the cornea allowing a very uniform
application of laser energy. The laser beam covers a broad area and allows a
smoother corneal reshaping that helps to increase the accuracy and efficiency
of the surgery.
• Zywave II wavefront aberrometer. The Zywave II wavefront aberrometer
employs wavefront technology to precisely identify errors within the patient's
entire optical system. This technology utilizes wavefront analysis, identifies
aberrations and measures refractive error and abnormal refractive errors identifying
those patients who may not be appropriate for refractive procedures.
• Orbscan II. The Orbscan II anterior segment analysis system creates a
new standard in surgical planning, measuring 18,000 data points in only three
seconds. This type of analysis provides in-depth information of the anterior
segment (front portion of the eyes) including both the anterior and posterior
surfaces of the cornea. Some of the properties that the Orbscan II can measure
are corneal elevations and curvatures, corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth,
and irregularity in depth and pupil size
CUSTOM CAP (TM) TREATMENT
VISX has recently received FDA approval for the use of the topographically driven
Custom Contour Ablation Pattern (Custom CAP) Method under a Humanitarian use
Device Exemption (HDE).
With Custom CAP treatment the laser surgeon can perform a treatment precisely
controlled by size, depth and location making it possible to reshape the cornea
for optimum correction. By using the VISX Star S4 active track excimer laser
together with a corneal topographer and highly specialized ablation planning
software, the surgeon is able to address decentrations resulting from previous
treatments.
Dr. Manche has received special training and special permission from the FDA
to become a Custom CAP treatment center. Dr. Manche was the first physician in
the United States to perform Custom-CAP.
