Lena: Cross cultural exchange

Posted 07:53 AM, July 07, 2006, by lenawine

Today, in the name of cross cultural understanding and in preparation for going to stay with our host families, we had 'a very important session.' We were all taken a bit off guard when they said that the 3 guys in a group would be having a separate discussion. I reasoned that maybe they would tell us about various sex differences in terms of household expectations. What happened next was much more amusing...

They got out a piece of paper that had a pit toliet drawn on it and proceeded to show us how to use it.

Hi Lena, I love reading your blog. I thought the experience with the doc and the women with her menstrual problems was fascinating. What an amazing way to learn just how important taking a good history is to good patient care. I think too often in the US with all our high tec stuff we just wait for the scan to give us a dx. I am amazed at the NIH how little attention is given to the history and physical. It is a right of passage in medical school to get over that uncomfortable feeling of being involved in a patient's most private concerns, but to do it in a different culture just adds to the experience. I continued to be amazed at your insight! Keep having fun! Wendy
