Mike: Solstice in Alaska

Posted 07:24 PM, June 21, 2006, by mpouliot

What better day than summer solstice to submit my first blog entry. The reason I'm indoors is that it's quite rainy and windy, and essentially feels like a really long winter day. I braved the conditions and went for a paddle, which reminded me why I love this place. The bald eagles are incredibly thick this time of year (mating?), I can see over a dozen of them playing in the wind as I type this.
I start at the hospital on friday.

I completely forgot about solstice because we are so close to the equator here that the length of the day doesn't vary much with the seasons. In Kenya, the sun rises at 6 am and sets at 6 pm. Time in Swahili is even different so that 1 in the morning is the same as 7 am, because it is always one hour after the sun has risen.

I was a bit sad when I first got here because the sun had been setting around 9 pm in Palo Alto and here it is gone by 7 pm (or 1 at night in Swahili), but now I've gotten used to it and I just got to bed by 10 pm.

Glad to hear you made it onto the water. I can't wait to hear more.
