Fourth annual Bipolar Education Day to be hosted at Stanford
By MARGARITA GALLARDO
STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford University Medical Center will host Bipolar Education Day on July 26 for patients and their families, caregivers, friends and all community members interested in the disorder.
The free event will be held at the William R. Hewlett Teaching Center, located at 370 Serra Mall on the university campus.
About 4 percent of Americans suffer from this psychiatric illness, which causes unusual shifts in a person’s mood, energy and ability to function. Bipolar Education Day, now in its fourth year, was originally designed to raise awareness and dispel misconceptions about the disorder.
“I’ve found these events to be extremely gratifying, as they kindle the interest, enthusiasm and hope of clients, providers and researchers alike,” said Terence Ketter, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and director of the Stanford Bipolar Disorders Clinic.
Ketter said there have been major advances in the last year in brain imaging research and medication and psychotherapy treatments for children, adolescents and adults. This year’s program includes discussions on these developments, as well as sessions on new treatment options, bipolar disorder in children and adolescents and the differences between subtypes of the disorder.
Among the event presenters are Ketter; Po Wang, MD, clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and Jenifer Culver, PhD, clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, both from the Stanford Bipolar Disorders Clinic; and Manpreet Singh, MD, instructor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences, from the Stanford Pediatric Bipolar Disorders Program. There will also be speakers from the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.
The program runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Pre-registration is required to attend the event. For registration and more information, please visit www.bipolar.org or contact Meredith Childers at (650) 724-4795 or mchilder@stanford.edu.
