Promise of stem cells to be discussed at Stanford symposium
STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Program on Stem Cells in Society will hold its second annual symposium, “Stem cell research hits the road,” Feb. 9 at the Clark Center auditorium on the Stanford University campus.
Former State Sen. Deborah Ortiz will deliver the keynote address on realizing the promise of Proposition 71, an initiative approved by California voters in 2004 to allocate $3 billion for stem cell research. Other speakers include Duke University’s Joanne Kurtzberg, MD, who will discuss cord blood treatments for children, and Santa Clara University’s Margaret McLean, PhD, who will talk about the types of patients who should receive stem cell treatments.
Additional presentations will feature pressing topics at the boundary between the bench and the bedside, including how laboratory data should be evaluated before the first human trials, and issues involving ethics and oversight of stem cell research.
The conference will run from 1 to 6 p.m. and is open to the public. No registration is required.
