FAR-REACHING WOMEN’S HEALTH ISSUES COVERED IN WEEKLONG STANFORD EVENT

STANFORD, Calif. – Women’s Health @ Stanford, a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to promoting wellness and preventing illness in women, is celebrating National Women’s Health Week with a series of free public events.

The weeklong celebration will kick off May 8 with a morning symposium on the prevention, screening and diagnosis of cancer. During the symposium at the new Stanford Cancer Center, physicians and researchers will discuss breast imaging, menopausal hormones and cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer and colon and rectal cancers. Linda Giudice, MD, PhD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology and medical director of Women’s Health @ Stanford, will introduce the speakers.

A “Common Ground” seminar May 12 will focus on issues of universal interest: heart disease prevention, menopause and medications, and exercise and osteoporosis. Other events include seminars on weight management and pregnancy and reproductive medicine. Lynn Westphal, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, will also discuss fertility options for cancer patients during a May 13 program on cancer-related issues.

National Women’s Health Week, May 9-15, is a national effort led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to raise awareness about manageable steps women can take to improve their health. May 10 has been designated as National Women’s Check-Up Day and Women’s Health @ Stanford provides screenings guidelines on its new Web site, http://womenshealth.stanford.edu/patient_care/general_screening.html.

To sign up for the free events, call (650) 724-1824 or e-mail . Additional information can also be found at http://womenshealth.stanford.edu.
