STANFORD BLOOD CENTER THROWS ALL-DAY PARTY TO ATTRACT TYPE-O DONORS
STANFORD - KFRC Oldies 99.7 FM will be at the Stanford Blood Center on Aug. 19 to promote type-O blood donations at the third annual “O! What a Party!” Between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., area residents with type-O blood are being asked to donate blood while enjoying food, fun and prizes, including a drawing for Oakland A’s tickets. Every donor will also receive a collectible party T-shirt. KFRC’s mobile diner will play music at the blood center while promoting the event on air throughout the day.
“Donors can enjoy oranges, Oreos and other ‘O’ foods while listening to oldies music. It’s a way to bring awareness about the importance of type-O blood,” said event coordinator Jennifer Reczkowski.
The event began three years ago in an effort to recruit type-O donors during the summer – one of the toughest times to collect blood. Type-O blood is particularly needed because anyone can receive it in an emergency. Also, nearly 45 percent of the U.S. population has that blood type. Units of type-O blood were needed recently for trauma patients and several transplant patients.
The Stanford Blood Center is located at 780 Welch Road, Suite 100 in Palo Alto. Donors of all blood types are welcome. Those who attend the event can also get information about the National Marrow Donor Program and be prescreened as a potential bone marrow donor.
The blood center serves Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Stanford Hospital & Clinics, the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, El Camino Hospital and O’Connor Hospital in San Jose.
Donors can call (650) 723-7831 or toll-free (888) 723-7831 to make an
appointment and get directions. Donors should be in good health with no
cold or flu symptoms. They must eat well prior to donation, drink fluids
and present photo identification at the time of donation. The process
takes about an hour, and a single donation can help up to three different
patients. For more information or to schedule an appointment online, please
