John Boothroyd appointed to endowed professorship

John Boothroyd has been appointed to an endowed professorship in immunology at the School of Medicine.

John Boothroyd

John Boothroyd, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology, was appointed the Burt and Marion Avery Professor in Immunology, effective Feb. 10.

Boothroyd investigates how single-celled parasites interact with the immune system of their animal and human hosts. Currently, he is examining how Toxoplasma gondii hijacks key immune functions when it infects a host cell, which is relevant to the treatment of patients with toxoplasmosis, especially newborns and immunocompromised patients.

The professorship was established in 1988 with a gift from the late Burt Avery and his wife, Marion. The family has ties to Stanford spanning four generations. This endowed professorship was the first one established in immunology at the university.
