James R. Doty, M.D., Stanford Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery, has been named director of the newly created Center for the Study of Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE), a part of the Stanford Institute for Neuro-Innovation and Translational Neuroscience (SINTN). The Center is a multi-disciplinary effort focused on understanding the neural, moral and social bases of compassion and altruism.

The program has been supported by His Holiness the Dalai Lama who personally donated the largest single gift he has given to scientific research.

The inaugural conference of The Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education will be held on March 4-6, 2009. This multi-disciplinary conference, entitiled "Definitions of Compassion, Empathy and Altruism" will include contemplative scholars, philosophers, primatologists, psychologists and neuroscientists.
