Stanford MSTP students enroll in PhD programs in the biomedical sciences, including those within the School of Medicine, the School of Humanities and Sciences (Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), and the School of Engineering (Bioengineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and more).
Health Research and Policy
Students interested in programs within the School of Medicine Department of Health Research and Policy (HRP) may apply through the Stanford MSTP (MD-PhD) application process. To apply for PhDs in Health Policy or Epidemiology and Clinical Research, please indicate MD-PhD in your Stanford supplementary application, and in the research essays that you would like to be considered for one of these two HRP programs. In addition, please notify both the MSTP office and the Health Research and Policy office of your MD-PhD application to these HRP PhD programs. Applications for these HRP fields will be specifically reviewed by faculty within the Department of Health Research and Policy in addition to MSTP faculty. For questions and notification regarding the application process, please contact the HRP office and the MSTP office.
Social Sciences - A separate process
MSTP application in conjunction with social science PhD programs is only permitted for current Stanford MD students previously admitted to a social science PhD program, through their PhD application process. MD students admitted to a Social Science PhD Program may apply for MSTP funding through the MSTP internal admissions process.
PhD only - A separate process
Admission to a PhD-only program is a separate application process. Application and School of Medicine Biosciences PhD admission information is available on the Biosciences PhD Programs site. For all other PhD programs, please contact the relevant Program or Department directly.
