Confidentiality

Freedom to discuss concerns without there being any influence on a student’s evaluation or grade is an essential component to the role of Associate Dean for Medical Student Life Advising.  As a general rule, Dr. Smith-Coggins provides a confidential environment. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that unlike discussions with an attorney, psychiatrist, ombudsperson or clergy, communications to the Associate Dean for Medical Student Life Advising are not shielded by law. There are situations (such as concerns relating to race and gender discrimination, sexual harassment or the personal safety of the student/others) which may need to be disclosed by the Associate Dean for Medical Student Life Advising because the University may be required to take some action to address these concerns. Although such occurrences are expected to be uncommon, when there is a need for a greater degree of confidentiality, the Associate Dean for Medical Student Life Advising can suggest to a student a resource (such as one of the four mentioned above) who carries such legal protection.
