Split Curriculum, Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) & Berg Scholars Program Activities

MD Program Year Activities

Autumn Quarter:

  • Enroll in pre-clinical courses
  • Attend "How to Find a Research Mentor" lecture
  • Identify a research mentor

Winter Quarter:

  • Enroll in pre-clinical courses
  • Enroll in INDE 267 Planning & Writing a Research Proposal

Spring Quarter:

  • Enroll in pre-clinical courses
  • Submit Medical Scholars Research (MedScholars) application
  • Meet with program director, Dr. Utz, to start planning Berg Scholars Program application

Summer Quarter:

  • If accepted in MedScholars, enroll in [DEPT] 370 Medical Scholars Research course; 100% funded by MedScholars
  • Submit Split Preclinical Curriculum Application Form and receive approval

Autumn Quarter:

  • Enroll in pre-clinical courses
  • If applying to become a Berg Scholar, meet with Dr. Utz to prepare for the application process

Autumn & Winter Quarters Split Curriculum:

  • Enroll in pre-clinical courses
  • If accepted in MedScholars, enroll in [DEPT] 370 Medical Scholars Research course
  • Typical schedule will be 7 half-days per week for MedScholars research project; 50% funded by MedScholars

Autumn, Winter, & Spring Quarters:

  • Enroll in INDE 217 Physician Scientist Hour

Autumn and/or Winter Quarter:

  • Enroll in one of the required MS in Medicine in Biomedical Investigation courses

Spring Quarter:

  • If accepted in MedScholars, enroll in [DEPT] 370 Medical Scholars Research course; 100% funded by MedScholars

Summer Quarter:

  • If applying to become a Berg Scholar this year, meet with Dr. Utz to prepare for the application process
  • Submit Berg Scholars Program application material

Autumn Quarter:

  • Enroll in pre-clinical courses
  • Present proposed research project to selection committee. If accepted:
    • Complete Graduate Program Authorization Petition
    • Submit Program Proposal for Masters Degree
    • Refer to Berg Scholars Program activities listed in year 2 and enroll in required courses when possible
  • Enroll in MED 255 The Responsible Conduct of Research and SOMGEN 223 Intro to R for Data Analysis

Autumn & Winter Quarters Split Curriculum:

  • If accepted in MedScholars, enroll in [DEPT] 370 Medical Scholars Research course
  • Typical schedule will be 7 half-days per week for MedScholars research project; 50% funded by MedScholars

Spring Quarter:

  • Enroll in INDE 224: Pathophysiology Capstone
  • Study for Step 1 exam
  • Student must take USMLE Step 1 prior to starting their research gap year

Summer Quarter (if formally accepted as a Berg Scholar):

  • Enroll in [DEPT] 399 Graduate Research as part of the MS in Medicine in Biomedical Investigation degree requirements; 100% funded by Berg Scholars Program

Autumn, Winter, & Spring Quarters (if formally accepted as a Berg Scholar, year 4 stipend, fees, and tuition are 100% funded by Berg Scholars Program):

  • Enroll in [DEPT] 399 Graduate Research as part of the MS in Medicine in Biomedical Investigation degree requirements

Winter Quarter:

  • If all requirements for the MS in Medicine in Biomedical Investigation will be met by the end of Spring Quarter, complete the online application to graduate in Axess
  • Schedule thesis defense

Spring Quarter:

  • Enroll in INDE 258 PSTP Career Development Symposium
  • Complete oral thesis defense
  • MS in Medicine in Biomedical Investigation graduation/degree conferral

Summer Quarter:

  • Enroll in clinical clerkships

  • Enroll in clinical clerkships
  • Participate in career development activities and mentorship opportunities to prepare for independence as a physician-scientist
  • Stipend, fees, and tuition are 100% funded by Berg Scholars Program
