Objectives and Goals

Independent Design SC allows students to work with a mentor to design their own Scholarly Concentration if they are interested in a methodological approach not available in the existing SCs.

Student prepares a proposal with faculty advisor input to include the following specific information:
  1. Proposed title.
  2. General program description and why it does not fit with the existing concentrations. Learning objectives and goals, scholarship/project plans.
  3. Primary faculty mentor.
  4. Faculty advisory group.
  5. Curriculum requirements with a brief description of each course (suggested 12 units maximum); can include seminar series, journal club.
  6. Graphic pathway of how the program fits with the medical school required curriculum.
  7. Discussion of how the program promotes interdisciplinary or bench-to-bedside thinking.
  8. Method of evaluation of successful completion of research/non-research options.

Approval

Proposal and a letter of support from the primary faculty mentor goes to the steering committee of Scholarly Concentration Directors for approval.

Oversight

Independent Design Scholarly Concentration Director and core committee (could bring in expert ad hoc members) review research proposals and course progress.
