In April 2009, Dean Philip Pizzo announced plans for change in the School of Medicine’s clerkship performance evaluation system:

Beginning Period 1 of the 2010-11 clerkship year, students will be able to be recognized for exceptional performance in each required clerkship.
The new system will include the following essential features:
- Evaluation of performance in clerkships will be criterion based. All students whose performance meets established criteria will be recognized for exceptional performance - independently of how other students perform. This is in contrast to a curved or norm-based system, where only a certain proportion of students are eligible to earn the top descriptor of performance.
- Performance criteria will be as specific, behavioral, and transparent as possible - so that students know clearly what to strive for in their work, and evaluators know clearly what to encourage and assess.
During the coming academic year, CBEI faculty, residents, and students will collaborate to develop criteria for exceptional performance.
A Steering Committee of physicians, educators and students will lead the initiative.
Four Working Groups will recommend specific criteria for Pass with Distinction and outline a plan for evaluating the impact of the new system.
