MD Student Academic Advising

The MD Advising system is set up to serve current students' needs throughout medical school. For prospective student advising, please refer to the Admissions department at med.stanford.edu/md/admissions.

Our four Advising Deans: Terry Blaschke (Medicine); Neil Gesundheit (Endocrinology, Gerontology and Metabolism); Susan Knox (Radiation Oncology); and Oscar Salvatierra (Surgery and Pediatrics) were selected, with the students' input, from a long list of interested faculty.

Each student is assigned a primary academic advising dean who will work closely with the student throughout medical school to optimize the student's course of study. Advisors are knowledgeable about the preclerkship curriculum, research opportunities, the clinical curriculum, and preparation for postgraduate study (residency). Advisors are helpful when students want to find creative pathways to achieve the goals of the medical curriculum. A principal goal of academic advising is to ensure that each student optimizes his or her path to the MD degree, utilizing the diverse resources of Stanford and the School of Medicine.

For general advising question, please contact the Office of MD Advising. We encourage and value your feedback on how the advising system can best serve your needs.
