Student Transfer Policy

Request will only be considered for transfer into the first clinical year. In order to be considered for transfer into the medical school at Stanford University, students are required to meet all of the following criteria:
- Must be married to, or be the domestic partner of:
- A medical or graduate student IN the Stanford School of Medicine, or
- A Stanford housestaff officer IN the Stanford University Medical Center, or
- A Stanford faculty member IN the Stanford School of Medicine
- Must be transferring from an LCME-accredited school;
- Must have the written approval of the Dean of the transferring institution; and
- Must have completed all preclinical course work and passed Step 1 of the USMLE licensing exam.
Students who believe they meet the above criteria should submit a letter to the Assistant Director of Admissions, Gregory Vaughn.
Any student requesting to transfer into the last clinical year will be considered only for individual clerkships as a Visiting Student.
In some years, there are no positions available and on average, no more than two transfer students will be accepted in any academic year. The decision on a transfer application is at the discretion of the Committee on Admissions. Written verification of eligibility may be requested.
