Berkeley Financial Aid

Berkeley offers a range of merit-based and need-based aid programs for graduate students.  For most need-based aid, including Federal Direct Loans and Perkins Loans, students must submit a FAFSA online and enter the federal school code for UC Berkeley (001312).  To apply for merit-based funding, students must also complete “Form C” in addition to the FAFSA.

For more information, see Insider’s Guide to the Stanford/Berkeley Dual Degree Program: Financial Aid

There is also a range of academic employment opportunities available at UC Berkeley, which provide monthly stipends and possibly fee remission for in-state students.

Stanford Financial Aid

Students can only receive Federal financial aid at one academic institution per year, excluding summers.  This means that Dual Degree students receiving Federal aid at UC Berkeley are ineligible for Federal financial aid through Stanford during the school year, but are eligible for aid during the summers before and after.

Students who will need Stanford financial aid during the summer after attending UCB must submit a financial aid application (including the FAFSA) in the spring prior to taking leave from Stanford. Priority is given to students whose applications are complete and ready for review by May 15. You should start the application process six to eight weeks before this date. No Stanford-based aid will be awarded to applicants who submit application materials after December 31.

Med Scholars

Dual Degree students may apply for funding for their research projects from the Stanford School of Medicine's Medical Scholars Research Program. However, funding can be granted only during quarters when the student is enrolled at Stanford (preceding and following enrollment at UCB, or with simultaneous enrollment at both institutions).  While not guaranteed, the likelihood that proposals will be funded will be greatly enhanced by early, clear, and consistent communication with a Stanford faculty advisor and with Pat Cross.

Any student wishing to enroll at Stanford during the school year (while also enrolled at UC Berkeley) for the purpose of obtaining Medical Scholars funding must enroll in a minimum of 9 units and pay full tuition to Stanford for the quarter.  This will count toward the required 13 quarters of enrollment, and tuition costs will be offset by Medical Scholars funding.  Students must also report any Stanford aid to the UCB financial aid office.
