Awards for teaching, care and research

Recognition of dedication and excellence to graduate and medical education, patient care and teaching were honored with the annual faculty and student awards on May 27 during a special recognition reception. These awards will also be announced at the School of Medicine's commencement ceremony on June 14.
Susan McConnell, PhD, professor of biology in the School of Humanities and Sciences, is the recipient of the School of Medicine Award for Graduate Teaching. The graduate awards recognize teaching excellence and exceptional impact in the graduate classroom and outstanding service on behalf of graduate students at the medical school. Recipients of the graduate education awards are chosen by medical faculty and MS and PhD students at the medical school.

The Stanford University School of Medicine Award for Outstanding Service to Graduate Students goes to Thomas Clandinin, PhD, assistant professor of neurobiology. This award, voted on by all graduating MS and PhD students and by the medical faculty, recognizes remarkable and extraordinary service on behalf of medical school graduate students.
The Kaiser Foundation Award for Excellence in Preclinical Teaching was chosen by students in preclinical medicine. The winners are John Gosling, MD, professor of anatomy, Peter Pompei, MD, associate professor of internal medicine and Elliott Wolfe, MD, consulting professor of medicine.
The Kaiser Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching was given to three faculty members—Paul Helgerson, MD, clinical instructor of internal medicine; Andrew Nevins, MD, clinical assistant professor of infectious diseases, and Erika Schillinger, MD, clinical associate professor of family medicine.

The Arthur L. Bloomfield Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Clinical Medicine, now in its 45th year, goes to Rebecca Blankenburg, MD, MPH, clinical instructor of pediatrics, and also to John Morton, MD, MPH, associate professor of surgery. The award commemorates the late Arthur Bloomfield, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine from 1926 to 1954. The recipients of these awards were chosen by students in clinical training.
The Alwin C. Rambar-James B.D. Mark Award for Excellence in Patient Care was presented to Bertil Glader, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics. The annual award recognizes a member of the medical faculty for compassion in working with patients and their families, excellence in providing medical treatment and effectiveness and pleasantness in interactions with patient-care staff. The Rambar award was established in 1985 to honor the late Alwin Rambar, MD, a Chicago pediatrician long associated with the medical school. It was renamed in 1997 to include James Mark, MD, a Stanford thoracic surgeon and professor emeritus who was also Rambar's son-in-law.

Three longtime awards created by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation are given each year for excellence in medical education and in clinical and preclinical teaching. This year's Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Outstanding and Innovative Contributions to Medical Education recognizes Lisa Chamberlain, MD, MPH, assistant professor of pediatrics.

Stanley Rockson, MD, the Allan and Tina Neill Professor of Lymphatic Research and Medicine, is the recipient of the Franklin G. Ebaugh Jr. Award for Advising Medical Students. The award honors the late Franklin Ebaugh, MD, longtime associate dean for veterans affairs and chief of staff at the VA hospital. The recipient of the award, which recognizes dedication to service, was chosen by medical students and full-time faculty members.
Six residents were chosen to receive the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Award for Humanism and Excellence in Teaching. The award recognizes medical residents for their humanism and for exemplary teaching of medical students. This year's recipients were Sarah Azad, MD, (obstetrics and gynecology), Monica Eneriz-Weimer, MD, (pediatrics), Ahmir Khan, MD, (neurology), Lana Schumacher, MD, (surgery), Dan Sedehi, MD, (internal medicine) and Jacob Towery, MD, (psychiatry).
