Overview

The physician scholars trained in this scholarly area will be positioned to be key originators and participants in the “bench-to-bedside” incorporation of advances in basic biomedical science into clinical practice. The training received in this scholarly area will serve as firm grounding for future academic physicians who may later have a major basic science research component to their careers, including a Ph.D. or research postdoctoral work.

This foundation will also serve future practicing physicians by training them in how scientific data are generated and evaluated in the research laboratory, and equipping them to follow the forefront of basic science literature related to their clinical specialties. The side-by-side training with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in basic science disciplines will provide invaluable background and a common language to physicians who will in the future nucleate or participate in interdisciplinary teams bringing current advances in basic biomedical research to clinical treatment.
