Vice Dean of the School of Medicine

David Stevenson, MD, became the Vice Dean in 2006. A faculty member since 1979, Stevenson was named the Harold K. Faber Professor of Pediatrics in 1992 and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in 2001. He has also served as the Chief of the Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine and the Associate Chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

Stevenson today oversees a number of programs within Stanford University Medical Center, including the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services, the pediatric branch of the General Clinical Research Center and an NIH-funded training program in Developmental and Neonatal Biology.

After receiving his BA in Philosophy from Stanford University in 1971, Stevenson went on to complete his MD and pediatric residency at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He returned to Stanford University in 1977 to complete his fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Dr. Stevenson has received many teaching and research awards. These include the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Outstanding and Innovative Contributions to Medical Education, the American Academy of Pediatrics Award for Excellence in Pediatric Research, the Duane Alexander Award for Academic Leadership in Perinatal Medicine, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development MENTOR Award for Excellence in Research Training, the Neonatal Education Award in Perinatal Pediatrics and the Virginia Apgar Award.

An accomplished independent investigator in neonatal biology, Dr. Stevenson has conducted extensive research in developmental heme metabolism, heme oxygenase biology and neonatal jaundice. Dr. Stevenson has published over 400 papers and is the editor of several textbooks and chapters in most of the major textbooks on neonatology.

Throughout his career, Stevenson has worked to advance pediatric medicine on the state and national level. In 2004, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Board of Pediatrics. He has also served as the President of the American Pediatric Society, among other positions. In 1994, Stevenson co-founded the California Association of Neonatologists (CAN) and served as its President from 1999 to 2000.
