SMYSP becomes part of pre-collegiate studies unit

The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program is one of six existing university programs aimed at middle and high school students that are part of a new administrative unit known as Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies.
The goal of the unit is to help individual programs achieve their objectives while promoting common goals across the university. The director is associate dean Raymond Ravaglia.
Provost John Etchemendy said Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies will coordinate and promote current university-sponsored pre-collegiate programs, and will invite faculty colleagues to propose new initiatives.
The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program offers a tuition-free five-week residential science- and medicine-based enrichment program for low-income high school students during the summer. Additionally, it provides a health disparities curriculum to high school students during the school year. SMYSP recently won a U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring,
“We are delighted that Stanford is making a stronger commitment to enrichment programs that reach out to talented students to reinforce their excitement about higher education and encourage them to become leaders in their communities,” said Marilyn Winkleby, PhD, an emeritus professor of medicine and faculty director of SMYSP.
