Abraham Verghese

Best-selling author and Stanford physician Abraham Verghese, MD, will discuss how to use fiction to explore truth at the annual Jonathan J. King Lecture sponsored by the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics.

Verghese’s lecture, “Fiction is the great lie that tells the truth,” will take place at 5 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Clark Center auditorium and is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow.

Verghese is a professor and senior associate chair for the theory and practice of medicine in the school’s Department of Medicine. He is an expert in clinical teaching, and encourages physicians to remember the value of practicing “hands-on” medicine with their patients rather than relying on impersonal technology.

His most recent book, Cutting for Stone, is his first novel. He has also published two nonfiction books as well as numerous essays and scientific papers.

The King Lectureship honors Jonathan King, a computer scientist and philosopher who received his master’s and PhD in computer science at Stanford.

Later, he became an advocate for patient’s rights after his diagnosis of cancer in 1989. The lectureship was established in his honor in 1991 to encourage the compassionate and humane care of all patients.
