Calling all stem cell buffs: Oct. 2 symposium
The Stanford Journal of Law, Science and Policy will be presenting a public symposium discussing the field's upcoming scientific and legal challenges on Oct. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The symposium will include four panels: Human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells; clinical trials; funding mechanisms and regulation; and intellectual property considerations.
Panelists will represent the fields of science, public policy, law, industry, and private foundations. Irving Weissman, MD, director of Stanford's Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, will be the keynote speaker. Other participants include Roger Pedersen, PhD, professor of regenerative medicine at the University of Cambridge; Henry Greely, professor of law at Stanford; Robert Keline, chairman of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine; Story Landis, PhD, chair of the NIH Stem Cell Task Force; Thomas Okarma, MD, PhD, CEO of Geron; Insoo Hyun, assistant professor of bioethics at Case Western; and Aurora Plomer, professor of law and bioethics at the University of Sheffield.
Stem cell professionals as well as other interested members of the Stanford community or the general public are invited to participate. The cost is $30 for the general audience; students are free with identification.
