Prize honors Pizzo for his work with children

The Ronald McDonald House Charities have awarded their Medical Award of Excellence to Philip Pizzo, MD, dean of the School of Medicine, for his contributions to childhood medicine. The award includes a $100,000 grant to donate to a charity of his choice.
The Medical Award of Excellence is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to improve the lives of children. The award was presented Nov. 7 in Rosemont, Ill.
“Dr. Pizzo is a rare individual who is not only an outstanding pediatrician, but is an exceptional researcher in pediatric medicine studying oncology and HIV/AIDS. He is committed to the medical and emotional well-being of every patient and family,” said Ronald McDonald House Charities CEO and president Marty Coyne. “We honor him for his vision, his passion and his lifelong commitment to rigorous scientific and ethical integrity in the care of children."
Pizzo said he will divide the award equally among four non-profit charities: the Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health; Special Love Inc. (which sponsors Camp Fantastic—a camp for children with cancer); the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health.
